Gaetano Cardinal Aloisi Masella (born September 30, 1826 in Pontecorvo , Province of Frosinone , Italy , † November 22, 1902 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

He was ordained a priest on June 3, 1849 . Pope Pius IX appointed him on May 22, 1877 titular Archbishop of Neocaesarea in Ponto . The episcopal ordination received his Alessandro Cardinal Franchi ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Filippo Manetti and Felix-Marie De Neckere . In the same month Gaetano Aloisi Masella was appointed Apostolic Nuncio of the Apostolic Nunciature in Munich . As such, he conferred with Otto von Bismarck in 1878 during his stay in Bad Kissingen .

In September 1879 he moved to Portugal as a nuncio . In November 1883 he was appointed to the Curia in Rome and was on March 14, 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Tommaso in Parione into the College of Cardinals received. From 1887 to 1888 he was prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics . In 1893 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede . From 1899 to 1902 he was prefect of the Congregation for Rites .

He was the uncle of the later Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella , whom he himself ordained a priest on June 1, 1902.

Gaetano Aloisi Masella died unexpectedly on November 22, 1902 in Rome; he was found dead at his desk, pen in hand, after he had celebrated Holy Mass early that morning . He has been in his family grave in the cathedral of Pontecorvo buried.
