San Tommaso in Parione is a Roman Catholic church and former titular church in Rome . Along with Santo Stefano degli Abissini, it is one of two Ethiopian national churches . The services are celebrated in the Ethiopian Rite , which, like the Coptic Rite, emerged from the Alexandrian Rite . The Cistercian order is responsible for the church . This maintains several churches in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The current priest is Father Mehari Habtai Ghebremedhin OCist from Eritrea, who carries out pastoral care with his confreres. It is used by the Ethiopian Catholic Church , which is in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
history
The church was first mentioned in 1139 in connection with a (re-) consecration. Presumably the church was enlarged or rebuilt and the founding took place in the 10th and early 11th centuries, like those of other small parish churches that were being built in the suburbs of Rome at the same time. At first it was run as a parish church and in 1186 as dependent on San Lorenzo in Damaso .
In 1561 St. Philipp Neri was ordained a priest here .
The current church was rebuilt by Francesco Capriani in 1582. It was paid for by the two laypeople Mario and Camillo Cerrini.
In the early 19th century, during the French siege, the small parish church fell into disrepair. In 1848 it was renovated by Antonio Cipolla, who gutted the building.
In 1906 the church lost its status as the parish church of Santa Maria in Vallicella (Chiesa Nuova) because it had become too small.
It was hardly used for 70 years. Then it became home to an Eritrean worship community.
Since around 1980, many immigrants from Ethiopia and Eritrea have come to Rome. This created several emigrant communities. Because the second national church of Santo Stefano degli Abissini in the Vatican is within the security area and is therefore inaccessible for most of the time, the emigrant communities have their headquarters in San Tommaso. That is why it is now also listed as a national church and a church of the Ethiopian rite. The Roman rite is usually no longer celebrated.
Cardinal priest
San Tommaso became titular church on July 10, 1517. The task of a cardinal priest to supervise the pastoral care in his titular church was mostly neglected by the officials of this church. In 1914 the title became vacant and on December 18, 1937 it was replaced by Pope Pius XI. canceled; On the same day, Santa Maria in Vallicella, which had already taken over the status of parish church, was elevated to the title church.
