Benedetto Cardinal Aloisi Masella (born June 29, 1879 in Pontecorvo , Province of Frosinone , Italy , † September 30, 1970 in Rome ) was a Vatican diplomat and later a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Benedetto Aloisi Masella attended Ferentino's seminary and the Almo Collegio Capranica , he studied philosophy and Catholic theology at several universities in Rome . On June 1, 1902, he received the sacrament of ordination through his uncle, Cardinal Gaetano Aloisi Masella . After further studies, he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican in 1906 and initially worked in the Vatican State Secretariat . From 1908 to 1919 he worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal .

After his appointment as titular Archbishop of Caesarea in Palestine and apostolic nuncio in Chile in 1919 gave him on December 21, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Sebastião Leite de Vasconcellos , Bishop Emeritus of Beja , and Antonio Maria Iannotta , Bishop of Sora, Aquino e Pontecorvo . On April 26, 1927, Pope Pius XI appointed him . to the Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil .

Pius XII. accepted Aloisi Masella on February 18, 1946 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Vallicella in the college of cardinals . Already on June 21, 1948 Masella was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina . In 1946 Masella represented the Pope in the celebrations of the coronation of Our Lady of Fatima . Pope Pius XII appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Order of the Sacraments in 1954 , which he headed until 1968. In July 1955, Cardinal Masella participated as papal legate at the 36th World Eucharistic Congress in Rio de Janeiro.

On October 9, 1958, he became Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church and as such headed the Vatican administration during the Sedis vacancies of 1958 and 1963. He was a participant in the 1958 conclave , in which Pope John XXIII. was chosen. From 1962 to 1965 Cardinal Masella was a councilor at the Second Vatican Council . He also took part in the conclave of 1963 , from which Paul VI. emerged as Pope.

Benedetto Aloisi Masella died of kidney disease in Rome on September 30, 1970 and was buried in the Cathedral of Pontecorvo .
