The diocese of Palestrina ( Latin Dioecesis Praenestina , Italian Diocesi suburbicaria di Palestrina ) is a suburbicarian diocese and as such belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Rome . The diocese has its seat in the city of Palestrina in the Lazio region .
history
The diocese was established in the 4th century . In the course of the reorganization of the suburbicarian dioceses after the promulgation of the Motu proprio Suburbicariis sedibus of April 11, 1962 by Pope John XXIII. , the diocese of Palestrina received its own ordinaries , autonomous from the cardinal bishops , which also have their official seat in the city of the same name . In 2002 the Subiaco Territorial Abbey ceded parts of its territory to the surrounding dioceses , including the diocese of Palestrina.
On February 19, 2019, Pope Francis decreed the unification of the diocese of Palestrina in persona episcopi with the diocese of Tivoli . The previous Bishop of Tivoli and previous Apostolic Administrator of Palestrina, Mauro Parmeggiani, was bishop of the dioceses thus united .
