José Saraiva Martins
José Cardinal Saraiva Martins CMF (born January 6, 1932 in Gagos do Jarmelo , Portugal ) is a Cardinal Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
José Saraiva Martins entered the Claretian Order after finishing school . He completed his theology studies with the licentiate examination at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He was ordained a priest on March 16, 1957 . After further years of study in Rome , he obtained a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas .
He then worked as a lecturer in metaphysics at the Claretian seminary in Marino , then as a professor of fundamental theology and sacraments at the Claretianum and at the Pontifical University of the City of Rome. In 1983 he was secretary of the sixth ordinary general assembly of the Synod of Bishops . On 26 May 1988 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Thuburnica and secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education . He was ordained bishop by Agostino Cardinal Casaroli on July 2nd of the same year.
On May 30, 1998, John Paul II appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and accepted him on February 21, 2001 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore in the college of cardinals . Cardinal Saraiva Martins was a participant in the 2005 conclave from which Benedict XVI. emerged as Pope. This confirmed him shortly after his election in his function as cardinal prefect . The new Pope returned to the older practice that beatifications are regularly carried out not by himself but by agents, now mostly outside of Rome (e.g. Franz Jägerstätter 2007 in Linz and Basile Moreau 2007 in Le Mans ). In 2007, under Martins' direction, 498 clergymen murdered in the Spanish Civil War were beatified , which was the largest event of its kind to date and sparked a fierce political controversy in Spain.
On July 9, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation of the Office of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, put forward by José Cardinal Saraiva Martins for reasons of age, and appointed Archbishop Angelo Amato as his successor. On February 24, 2009 Benedict XVI appointed him. the cardinal bishop of Palestrina . In the same month he described gay marriage as "not normal" and caused a stir. Children who grow up in such circumstances are said to have “no normal educational path”. Saraiva also described the marriage of a Catholic woman to a Muslim man as "dangerous".
Cardinal Saraiva Martins did not take part in the 2013 conclave because the age limit of 80 years was exceeded . On July 9, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him special envoy to the 24th International Marian Congress, which took place in Fátima from September 6 to 11 of the same year .
