James Francis Cardinal McIntyre (born June 25, 1886 in New York City , New York - † July 16, 1979 in Los Angeles , California ) was Archbishop of Los Angeles .

Life

James Francis McIntyre was born into a family of Irish descent in Manhattan . He worked on the New York Stock Exchange for the securities trading company HL Horton & Co, which offered him the opportunity to join the company as a junior partner. However, he decided at the age of 30 years to become a priest and entered 1916 in the seminary of St. Joseph's Seminary and College in Dunwoodie ( Yonkers one). There he studied philosophy and Catholic theology and received on 21 May 1921, the sacrament of Holy Orders. After two years as a parish chaplain in New York, he became Vice Chancellor in 1923 and Chancellor of the Archdiocese in 1934 . In 1934 he was awarded the honorary title of private treasurer of His Holiness , on November 12, 1936 Pope Pius XI awarded him . the title of papal house prelate.

On November 16, 1940 he was appointed titular bishop of Cyrene and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New York . The episcopal ordination donated him on January 8, 1941 Archbishop Francis Cardinal Spellman ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishop in New York, Stephen Joseph Donahue , and the military bishop of the USA , John Francis O'Hara CSC . In 1945 he became vicar general of the archdiocese. A year later Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Paltus and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of New York. On February 7, 1948, James Francis McIntyre was appointed Archbishop of Los Angeles . In the consistory of January 12, 1953 Pope Pius XII took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Anastasia in the College of Cardinals . He took part in the 1958 conclave that John XXIII. chose, as well as at the conclave in 1963 , the Paul VI. elected to the Pope.

James Francis McIntyre represented the Pope on several occasions as the papal legate and participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . He resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on January 21, 1970 for reasons of age.

James Francis McIntyre died on July 16, 1979 in Los Angeles and was buried in the mausoleum of the bishops in Calvary Cemetery in east Los Angeles. In 2003 his bones were transferred to the newly built Metropolitan Cathedral of Los Angeles Our Lady of the Angels .
