Congregation of the Holy Cross

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Congregation of the Holy Cross ( Latin Congregatio a Sancta Cruce , abbreviation : CSC ) is a Roman Catholic congregation .

It has its origin in the turmoil after the French Revolution . Its founder, Blessed Basile Antoine Moreau , was a priest of the Diocese of Le Mans . At the request of the bishop, in addition to leading the congregation, he took on responsibility for another community of brethren founded 15 years earlier by a diocesan priest. Moreau united the two communities into one congregation in 1837, which soon spread internationally.

The congregation has a male and a female branch. Today's international fraternity includes brothers and priests. Her areas of activity are in the preaching of the faith, in schools and universities. Today the community has 1670 priests and brothers in 13 provinces , mainly in Canada , Algeria , USA (Mother Church of the Sacred Heart Basilica ), as well as in Uganda , Tanzania , Peru , Mexico , Kenya , India , Haiti , Ghana , Chile , Brazil and Bangladesh . The presence in France has not been very pronounced since the politically motivated expulsion of the Order in 1903.

In 2010 the first member of the congregation was canonized. Brother André Bessette (1845–1937), who worked as a porter in Quebec , is thus one of the most famous brothers of the Holy Cross.
