The Herz-Jesu-Basilica ( Basilica of the Sacred Heart ) is a Roman Catholic university , religious, and pilgrimage church in Notre Dame , St. Joseph County , in the US state of Indiana . The neo-Gothic church was built in 1870 and bishop on August 15, 1888 Joseph Dwenger ordained . Since 1992 it has had the rank of a minor basilica .

history

The Catholic presence in the region goes back to the French Jesuit mission of the 17th century. Interrupted by the defeat of France in the colonial war in 1763, it was renewed from 1832 by priests of the Congregation of the Holy Cross . Edward Sorin CSC founded the University of Notre Dame and built the predecessor of today's basilica in 1848 to replace an older chapel. Planning began in 1870 and the foundation stone was laid in 1871. In 1875 the first holy mass could be celebrated in the church. After a thorough restoration from 1988-1991, Pope John Paul II awarded it the title of basilica on January 17, 1992.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is to this day, in addition to its function for the university community, the mother church of the Holy Cross Congregation in the USA. It is visited by many tourists and worshipers because of its architecture and its art and reliquary treasures.

Architecture and equipment

The church is a three-aisled, cruciform basilica made of limestone and brick . The neo-Gothic ornamental forms are particularly elaborate on the 66 m high tower and the choir with its seven wreath chapels . The church, which is 84 m long and 35 m wide, can accommodate 1,000 people.

44 large, figure-rich stained glass windows, manufactured between 1870 and 1890 in Le Mans , give the interior a multicolored light. Luigi Gregori painted the 56 murals and the Stations of the Cross . The altar and sculpture decorations are based on Italian models from the Gothic and Renaissance periods, the blue vault painting in particular based on the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .

The chimes include an eight-ton Bourdon bell and a 23-part carillon .
