Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels ( English Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels ) in Los Angeles is the Episcopal Church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles . It was built between 1999 and 2002 according to plans by the Spanish architect José Rafael Moneo .
building
The cathedral made of sand-colored exposed concrete stands in the north of downtown Los Angeles right next to the Santa Ana Freeway . It has a total length of 120.62 m and holds 3,000 people. The patronage takes on the original full name of the city (Spanish Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles : "Parish of Our Lady of the Queen of the Angels").
Robert Graham created the monumental figure "Our Lady of the Angels" above the portal . From the entrance side and the highway, the central cross is visible, which is designed as a giant concrete sculpture in the alabaster window of the altar area. At night this cross is illuminated.
Inside the cathedral, the pews are grouped around the altar on three sides. On the floor, concentric circles extend from the altar through the entire church. Muted daylight falls into the interior through side alabaster windows. The ten side chapels are entered through side walkways. One of them is the Sacrament Chapel , which is not visible from the main room.
Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral replaced St Vibiana's 1876 Cathedral , which was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake . In 1996 the archdiocese tried to demolish the old cathedral without permission. This was eventually prevented through efforts by the City of Los Angeles and conservationists, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation .
Because of the high construction costs of 200 million US dollars , the plans for the church, also named Tadj Mahony after Cardinal Mahony , were controversial. In addition to a demonstration against the abuse cases in the Catholic Church, there was also a demonstration against the high costs at the opening ceremony.
mausoleum
The lower church of the cathedral was dedicated for funeral purposes. More than 6000 people can be buried here. 1275 coffin burials and 4794 urn burials are possible. In addition, an area has been set up for the installation of memorial plaques. The fees for the funeral will go to a fund for the maintenance of the cathedral.
A chapel adjoins the mausoleum, into which the relics of St. Bibiana (St. Vibiana), a saint of the 3rd century, not to be confused with Bibiana of the same name , were transferred from the old cathedral. The lead glass windows of the old cathedral were also used in the lower church.
In addition to the former bishops of Los Angeles, the actors Gregory Peck and June Marlowe and the sculptor Robert Graham are buried in the lower church.
organ
The organ of the new cathedral contains pipe material from the organ of St. Vibiana Cathedral, which was built in 1929 by the organ builder Wangerin (Milwaukee) and in 1988 by the organ builder Austin Organs inc. had been reorganized. The instrument has 88 registers (including 8 extended registers) and 17 transmissions on four manuals (five manual works) and pedal .
