June Marlowe (1925)

June Marlowe (* 6. November 1903 in St. Cloud , Minnesota as Gisela Valaria Goetten ; † 10. March 1984 in Burbank , California ) was an American actress with German roots. She had her best-known role as the lovely teacher Miss Crabtree in a total of six films by The Little Rascals .

life and career

June Marlowe was born under the name Gisela Valaria Goetten as the daughter of German-Americans . She was the oldest of five children, and her younger siblings later also had smaller careers in the film industry. In 1920 the family moved to Los Angeles, where June was discovered in high school by director Malcolm St. Clair . The good-looking actress made her film debut in 1923 and soon played major roles in five films with the then famous German shepherd Rin Tin Tin . The brunette was voted one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1925 and subsequently received leading roles. In 1929 she visited Germany and made two silent films there for Universal Pictures : Solang 'noch unter Linden ... with Paul Henckels and The Strange Past of Thea Carter with Olaf Fønss , in both films Marlowe played the leading female role. She then returned to the United States, but the transition from silent film to sound film was difficult for her.

She was near the end of her acting career when she happened to meet Our Gang director Robert F. McGowan in a Los Angeles department store. McGowan was looking for an actress who could play the role of the teacher Miss Crabtree for the little thugs . He offered her the role without knowing that Marlowe had been an actress for seven years. The Scamp -producer Hal Roach made sure that Marlowe's brunette hair was dyed blond, and then undertook her as Miss Crabtree. In the role of the pretty and friendly teacher, she played a total of six times between 1930 and 1932 with the little rascals, including three times with Jackie Cooper , who is in love with the teacher in his role as a student. The role of Miss Crabtree is considered to be the most popular "adult role" in the entire film series and is probably one of the most famous fictional teachers at all.

She also played the attractive daughter of a prison director in Laurel and Hardy's first feature film, Behind Locks and Bars, in 1930 .

In 1933 Marlowe married the businessman Rodney Sprigg and, after having made more than 40 films, ended her acting career to work as a housewife. With her retirement, Miss Crabtree also disappeared from the series, although producer Roach made several attempts to get Marlow back. She remained married to Sprigg until his death in August 1982 and wrote two children's books in later years. June Marlowe died in 1984 at the age of 80 from complications from Parkinson's disease . She was originally buried in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery near Los Angeles, but in 2002 she was reburied in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels .
