Teacher's Pet (also known in Germany as Jackie and the New Teacher ) is an American short film comedy about the little rascals directed by Robert F. McGowan from 1930.

action

On the first day of the new school year, the students are unhappy because their beloved teacher Miss McGillicuddy has married and they are now getting a new teacher. The students only know the name of the new teacher, namely "Miss Crabtree" (Crabtree means "Nörgelbaum" in German) and they imagine her as a vicious old witch. So they want to give the new teacher a bad reception with sneezing powder , red ants and white mice. In addition, the younger siblings of the pupils should come to class and say that the pupils have to go home because they are required there - which of course does not correspond to the truth, because afterwards the pupils want to go fishing. The leader of these pranks is Jackie, who is taken along by a pretty young woman in a shiny roadster on the way to school . Jackie doesn't know that the friendly young woman is Miss Crabtree, so he tells the whole plan of how they want to put the hated new teacher to flight. Miss Crabtree lets him drop out shortly before school and Jackie raves about her afterwards and wishes she were the new teacher.

But he is all the more shocked when the young driver introduces herself to the class as Miss Crabtree. Since Jackie inadvertently informed her of all the plans that were hatched up beforehand, she has an easy time with the students and can thwart her tricks. Two vendors finally bring large quantities of ice cream and cake for the students, a welcome gift from Miss Crabtree. At the same time, the younger siblings of Jackie, Farina, Chubby and Buddy appear and announce that their siblings have to go home because they are required there. Miss Crabtree sends her home even though she knows the apologies are fake. The four students are frustrated that they will not get ice cream and cake and all the blame is placed on Jackie. While Farina, Chubby and Buddy go back to school and apologize to Miss Crabtree for some ice cream, Jackie never wants to go back to school because he is too embarrassed. Miss Crabtree comes to him and gives him his portion of ice, whereupon he says that she is even more beautiful than the previous teacher Miss McGillicuddy.

background

The film was filmed from May 21 to May 29, 1930 and released in October 1930. There was also a Spanish version of the film for the Spanish-speaking countries. Teacher's Pet was the 101st film by The Little Rascals.

Teacher's Pet is the first of six films starring June Marlowe as the lovely teacher Miss Crabtree. It was also the first part of the "Jackie / Miss Crabtree Trilogy", which also includes the films School's Out (1930) and Love Business (1931). Jackie Cooper was so convincing in this film in particular that he received major roles in feature films such as The Champ and Skippy the next year and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor as the youngest person at the time . In addition to Miss Crabtree - who is still the most popular adult character in the series - Matthew Bears can also be seen for the first time in the series. His character is called Hercules in this film and is Farina's little brother. Beard's character Hercules was renamed "Stymie" after two films and became one of the most important characters in the series for the next five years. On the other hand, it was the last film for the 82-year-old silent film and theater veteran William Courtright , who took Miss Crabtree's order and gave her lustful looks. He then withdrew from the film business and died in 1933.

This film was also the template for the plot of Bored of Education , another film by The Little Rascals from 1936. Directed by Bored of Education Gordon Douglas, who has a brief appearance here in Teacher's Pet as a supplier. Because Bored of Education is half as long as this film at just ten minutes, the plot has been flattened significantly: a student does not accidentally tell the young teacher her plans, but the teacher overhears the students. Bored of Education won an Oscar for Best Short Film in 1937 as the only film of the Little Rascals .

Also for the first time, "The Good Old Days" was used, the famous title and signature music of the Little Rascals by Leroy Shield. The film was also one of a series of films by Hal Roach Studios, which do not begin with the usual subtitles with the names of the participants, but with young twins, Betty Jean and Beverly McCrane, who recite the names of the participants. This experiment with talking film credits was ended as early as 1931.

Reviews

Teacher's Pet is considered by many to be one of the best films in the Little Tramp film series, which has produced over 220 films over a period of 22 years. The New York Times called the film an "undeniable classic".
