Bored of Education is a comedic American short film from 1936. The film is an episode of the popular US film series The Little Rascals (OT: Our Gang , also known as Little Rascals ).
action
The first day of school is no reason for schoolchildren to be happy. Not knowing their new teacher, Spanky and Alfalfa devise a plan to stay away from school. Alfalfa is supposed to simulate a toothache by stuffing a balloon into his mouth to simulate swelling.
The two do not know that the new teacher Miss Lawrence saw the plan. As a surprise for the children, she ordered ice cream. Alfalfa is unwilling to sing along to Good Morning to You . The teacher lets Alfalfa and Sparky go home. The boys triumph, but then they see the man who delivers the ice cream. Now they want to find a way back into the classroom. Spanky pops the ball in Alfalfa's mouth and presents Miss Lawrence to a quickly recovered schoolmate.
Miss Lawrence has the boys return to the classroom. But since he did not sing the greeting song, alfalfa should play another song. Alfalfa accidentally swallowed the balloon stopper. As he starts a song, a strange puff can be heard every time he inhales. Spanky and alfalfa are now supposed to get their ice cream ration too, but the ice has now melted. But Miss Lawrence, nice and friendly, gives them two fresh portions of ice cream.
Awards
In 1937 the film won an Oscar in the Best Short Film (One-Reel) category . It was the only film by The Little Rascals that received this award.
background
The film premiered on August 20, 1936. The film is based on the short film Teacher's Pet , which had been released six years earlier , also with the little thugs. The director of that film, Gordon Douglas, had a minor supporting role in Teacher's Pet, delivering ice cream and cake. Since Bored of Education is half as long as Teacher's Pet at only ten minutes , the plot has been flattened significantly: a student does not accidentally tell the young teacher her plans, but the teacher overhears the students.
In Germany, this film was shown on TV in the ZDF series Die kleine Strolche (episode The First School Day ). However, the film was cut together with other short films in the series.
