history

Francisco Oliveira, President of Air Timor (2019)

Air Timor was founded as Austasia Airlines. Between 2001 and 2007 it operated as a charter route between Australia and Indonesia . In 2007 the seat was moved to East Timor and the company was also registered in Singapore . There is a third office in Perth . Since August 1, 2008, she has operated the Dili – Singapore route with an Airbus A319-100 from Silk Air . In 2010 the name was changed to the current name.

Air Timor initially served from Dili from Singapore and Denpasar . On January 4, 2017, Air Timor surprisingly announced that it would suspend the route to Denpasar from January 10. The reason given was the lack of profitability since NAM Air was also approved for the route by the East Timorese government in 2015 . This created overcapacities. While NAM Air made up for this by rebooking passengers on its parent company Sriwijaya Air , Air Timor lost $ 10,000 a day. Director Abessy Bento sharply criticized Deputy Transport Minister Inácio Moreira : The government's policy would have destroyed Air Timor. The price dumping also had an impact on the connection to Singapore, which is why it was cut from three to twice a week. If the number of passengers on the route does not increase in 2017, flights to Singapore are also to be discontinued.

From December 2017 to February 2018 Air Timor offered flights to Kupang with aircraft from TransNusa Air Services . The route has been offered again with TransNusa since June 14, 2019. From January 2020, Air Timor will be serving the Singapore – Dili route with an Airbus A319 from Drukair .

In 2019, Silk Air ended its contract with Air Timor, so the last flight on the route took place on March 30th. The reason given was the termination of the contract by Singapore Airlines , the parent company of Silk Air, that the planes would be returned to the fleet.

On October 17, 2019, Air Timor announced the resumption of the Dili-Singapore route on October 31, 2019. Airbus A319 from Druk Air, the national airline from Bhutan, are used. The route is operated twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. For Druk Air this means the continuation of their Singapore flight from Paro (Bhutan).

The East Timorese government held talks with Malaysia . There were considerations for flights to Kuala Lumpur . Negotiations with the Chinese Air Travel eventually led to a code-sharing agreement . Air Travel plans to fly to Dili from Hong Kong as its first international destination. From here, other destinations in the region will be served. Connections to Bali, Shenzhen , Perth and Darwin are planned . An Airbus A319 is to be used.

In July 2020, the airline was taken over by an investor from Singapore .

Fleet and routes

Air Timor does not have its own fleet, but leases an Airbus A319 from the Bhutanese Druk Air to operate the route to and from Singapore.
