Sriwijaya Air is an Indonesian airline based in Jakarta and based at Soekarno-Hatta Airport .

history

The company was founded in 2003 and its name is based on the old Srivijaya Empire . With NAM Air , Sriwijaya Air owns a feeder company.

On November 9, 2018, Garuda Indonesia announced the acquisition of Sriwijaya Air by its subsidiary Citilink .

Incidents

The Boeing 737-200 ( registration number PK-CJG ) that crashed on August 27, 2008

Sriwijaya Air recorded three incidents in its history with total aircraft loss, in one incident one person was killed on the ground:

  • On August 27, 2008, a Boeing 737-200 ( registration number PK-CJG ) with 124 passengers and a crew of six had an accident en route from Jakarta to Jambi . During the approach to Jambi, hydraulic system A failed at an altitude of 1,600 feet, and although there was enough time for a missed approach to work through the associated emergency procedure and calculate the landing distance, the pilot decided to land directly. The Boeing 737-200 came to a halt 120 meters past the end of the runway. Two farmers who worked there were injured and a third was killed. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
  • On December 20, 2011, a Boeing 737-300 (registration number PK-CKM ) with 131 passengers and a crew of six had an accident en route from Jakarta to Yogyakarta . Upon landing, the pilot noticed that the aircraft would no longer stop in time before the end of the runway and steered the aircraft to the left. The front and left landing gear of the aircraft collapsed . Numerous passengers were injured during the evacuation. The Boeing 737-300 had to be written off.
  • On June 1, 2012, a Boeing 737-400 ( registration number PK-CJV ) with 155 passengers and a crew of eight had an accident en route from Jakarta to Pontianak . In heavy rainfall, the aircraft came off the runway on landing, the front landing gear sank into the soft ground and collapsed. The plane had to be written off.

Animal transport

The airline carries out the transport of dolphins to the respective venue on behalf of Indonesian traveling circuses .
