The Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina ( Bosnian Historijski muzej Bosne i Hercegovine ) is a museum in Sarajevo , the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located on the wide main thoroughfare Zmaja od Bosne , opposite the US embassy, right next to the National Museum .

The Historical Museum was founded on November 13, 1945 in the Bosnian capital as a "Revolution Museum". It houses around 300,000 exhibits from the middle of the 10th century to 1995 and shows the development of the country under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary as well as from the time of Yugoslavia to the country's independence and the Bosnian War .

During the war from 1992 to 1995, the museum was temporarily located directly on the front line and was badly damaged in parts; however, the museum exhibits were successfully saved from destruction. After the war, the permanent exhibition “Sarajevo under siege” was opened, which at the moment (November 2018), in addition to a video installation, essentially makes up the public part of the museum and is dedicated to the siege of Sarajevo by the Vojska Republike Srpske . This shows u. a. Weapons, ammunition and equipment of the fighters, survival strategies of the inhabitants of Sarajevo as well as objects that were used to bridge everyday war life. There are still numerous bullet holes in the museum building itself.

financing

The Historical Museum is one of the seven national cultural institutions whose funding has not yet been regulated since the end of the war. According to the constitution, the authorities of the two entities, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska , are responsible for this.

On January 4, 2012, the museum had to be temporarily closed due to a lack of funds. According to the museum director, the closure should only take place for a limited time until a solution to finance the heating and electricity costs and pay the employees can be found. The art gallery and the national museum were also affected by the closure.

Despite still uncertain financing, the museum was reopened in June 2014 after a break of more than two years, but it is still characterized by significant structural defects and partially closed to visitors (as of November 2018).
