The Irish Independent is the largest daily newspaper in Ireland and the flagship of Independent News & Media . The newspaper first appeared on January 2, 1905, replacing the Irish Daily Independent taken over by William Martin Murphy .

history

The importance of the Irish Independent in Ireland from the 20th century to the 1970s as an organ of the conservative Catholic middle class can hardly be overestimated .

Irish Independent editorials called for the actual executions of supporters of the Easter Rising and lockouts that lasted for several months.

In 1973 Tony O'Reilly took over the Independent Newspapers newspaper group with the Irish Independent. As a result, the created group Independent News & Media with activities in the British Isles , in South Africa , India , Indonesia , Australia and New Zealand , including broadcasting .

In 2019 the O'Reilly family sold INM to the Belgian media group Mediahuis .
