The international airport Supadio ( Indonesian Bandara Internasional Supadio , IATA : PNK , ICAO : WIOO ) is located around 17 kilometers from Pontianak , the capital of the Kalimantan Barat province . The airport is currently under construction with a new terminal building and the extension of the runway to meet international requirements.

history

It was opened in 1940 during the colonial period with the name Sungai Durian Airfield and renamed Supadio Airport in 1980. Another renaming to Sultan Hamid II International Airport was proposed in 2006 but then rejected again.

In 2000 an international flight route from Supadio Airport to Kuching Airport (Malaysia) was opened for the first time.

Incidents

  • On November 2, 2010, overran Boeing 737-400 of Lion Air (PK-LIQ) the runway end while landing at the airport in Pontianak. All 174 passengers and crew members could be evacuated using emergency slides . Few injuries were reported.
  • On June 1, 2012, a Boeing 737-400 operated by Sriwijaya Air (PK-CJV) slipped off the runway at Pontianak Airport in heavy rain . Nobody was injured, but the plane was damaged beyond repair.
