Pontianak (Chin .: Khuntien) is an Indonesian city on the island of Borneo . It is the capital of the province of Kalimantan Barat (West Borneo) and has around 517,000 inhabitants.
location
The city is located in the southwest of the island, at the mouth of the Kapuas River , almost exactly on the equator . The city center is about 3 kilometers south of the equator. Therefore, Pontianak is often called Kota Khatulistiwa (Equator City ).
Economy and education
Pontianak has an airport and a major port, where rubber, palm oil , sugar, copra, pepper and gold are exported. Gold is mined from a mine near the city, the pepper is grown in the outskirts of the city. Other important industries are shipbuilding and the processing of agricultural products. Pontianak is also the seat of two universities . One of them, Tanjungpura University, was founded in 1963; it is located in the city center.
history
The city was founded in 1771 by Arab ship travelers and traders who also established a sultanate here. As early as 1778 the Dutch established a trading post for the Dutch East India Company here . Eventually the city came under Dutch control in the 2nd half of the 19th century and was part of Dutch colonial possession. During World War II , Pontianak was occupied by the Japanese . In 1950 the southern part of the island of Borneo and the city of Pontianak became part of the newly established Indonesia.
