The Kapuas is a river or stream on the island of Borneo . It flows through the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan . With a length of 1143 km it is the longest river in Borneo and the longest river in Indonesia. It rises in the Müller Mountains in the center of Borneo. In the southwest of the island, the Kapuas flows into the Karimata Strait near the town of Pontianak , which connects the Java Sea with the South China Sea .

While Pontianak is a modern city, mainly inhabited by Muslim Malays , various Dayak ethnic groups live upstream on the banks of the Kapuas and its tributaries .
