Batavia Air was an Indonesian airline based in Jakarta and based at Soekarno-Hatta Airport .
history
Batavia Air was founded in 2001 by the travel agency PT Metro Batavia. After receiving the operating license in 2002, flight operations could begin in January 2002. Batavia Air participated in the rapid growth of aviation in Indonesia, triggered by low-cost flights that made flying affordable for new population groups. Were used Boeing 737 , including mainly the 737-200, but also occasionally -300 and -400 and Fokker aircraft.
In 2005, the decision was made to add significantly younger Airbus A319s to the fleet . To this end, a leasing contract was signed with AerCap in November 2005 for three Airbus A319s that were to be put into fleet at the end of 2006. In addition, it was announced that in the future - probably from 2007 - the older Boeing 737-200s would be exchanged and replaced with newer aircraft, either of the type A319 / A320 or newer Boeing 737 models. At the end of 2007, Batavia Air placed an order with ATR for ten ATR 72-500s with an option for a further ten aircraft of the same type. The regional aircraft were to be used on regional routes for which the other aircraft in the fleet would be too large. 74 passengers were planned for each aircraft. This was the first order for ATR aircraft from an Indonesian airline. However, the order was later canceled and the aircraft never delivered.
In 2008 it became known that the founder and owner of the company, Yudiawan Tansari, who also owned the travel agency involved in the establishment, might sell the airline if a good offer was made. In 2007, the company carried a total of 7.5 million passengers with 25 aircraft, some of which were leased. The aircraft would have achieved an average load factor of 85-90 percent. Overall, the company had in 2007 a profit of 6 million US dollars made on the other side, however, were debts of about 10 million US dollars. Ultimately, the company was not sold.
In May 2012 it became apparent that Batavia Air was suffering from major financial problems. Numerous aircraft were picked up by the lessors or returned by Batavia Air itself, while numerous flights had to be canceled after leasing installments could not be paid. Rumors of an imminent bankruptcy of the low-cost airline made the rounds.
On January 30, 2013, Batavia Air finally filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations.
aims
Batavia Air recently served around 50 destinations. Most of the destinations were inland, but there were also international connections such as to China , East Timor , Malaysia or Singapore . According to the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union, the aircraft of Batavia Air were exempt from the landing ban for Indonesian airlines in the EU, but flights there were recently not offered.
