The cichlids (Cichlidae) of the genus Aequidens ( Latin : aequus = "equal", dens = "tooth") live in northern and central South America to northern Argentina .

features

They are small and medium-sized cichlids with a rounded head profile. As the smallest species, Aequidens hoehnei is only 7.5 centimeters tall, while the species from the relational group of the green-gloss cichlid ( Aequidens tetramerus ) can reach a length of 25 centimeters. The base of the dorsal and anal fin are scaly in Aequidens , in contrast to Cichlasoma where the base is provided with scales.

species

Aequidens pallidus
Aequidens sp. "Jaru"

Aequidens was originally a collective genus to which over 25 species were counted. After the establishment of new genera ( Bujurquina , Cleithracara , Guianacara , Krobia , Laetacara and Tahuantinsuyoa ) for species formerly assigned to Aequidens , 17 species are currently classified in the Aequidens genus . There are also some previously undescribed species.

Many species of the genus Aequidens are popular aquarium fish. They are not as aggressive and do not dig as hard as the related genus Cichlasoma from the same habitat.
