Bujurquina is a genus of South American cichlids . The distribution area of the genus extends from northern and northwestern South America ( Venezuela , Colombia , Ecuador ) to the river systems of Río Paraguay and Río Paraná in Argentina. The genus was named after the Peruvian expression "Bujurqui" for cichlids.
features
Bujurquina species are 6 to 15 centimeters long. Their body resembles the Aequidens species, is moderately high back and flattened on the sides. The mouth is terminal, the forehead rounded. The dorsal fin is low, the rear edge of the caudal fin mostly straight; sometimes tapering into two points. A characteristic feature of the genus is a black longitudinal band that extends from the rear edge of the gill cover to below the rear base of the dorsal fin and extends in front over the gill cover and over the eyes to the forehead. The basic color of the fish is usually light gray-green or gray-brown. In addition, there is a metallic sheen and in many cases line or dot patterns on the lower head. The soft radiating part of the dorsal and anal fin is often dotted green or blue. The sexes are difficult to distinguish.
Bujurquina species are larvophilic mouthbrooders . The eggs are first laid on a stone as with substrate spawners, and the hatched larvae are then taken into the mouth by the parents.
species
The genus currently consists of 18 described species. There are also around ten other species that have not yet been taxonomically processed.
