Andinoacara ("Andino" for the Andes ; "Acará" Tupí-Guaraní - expression for cichlids) is a genus of South American cichlids consisting of eight species. The genus occurs in northern South America on the western side of the Andes in northern Peru , Ecuador and western and northern Colombia, in the Orinoco basin , in southern Central America on the Pacific side of southern Costa Rica and Panama and on the island of Trinidad . The genus was only introduced in 2009 by a group of Czech ichthyologists and combines the species of the former " Aequidens " - pulcher and "Aequidens" - rivulatus group.
features
The genus has not been adequately diagnosed and morphological autapomorphies have not been named. Andinoacara species are medium-sized cichlids and grow to be 10 to 20 centimeters long. Its body is flattened on the sides, high back and oval in shape. The head profile is rounded, the mouth at the end. They are usually quite colorful. Color-contrasting fin edges are typical. The Andinoacara species differ from the genus Aequidens mainly in their bone structure, scaling and coloration. Andinoacara species are territory-forming substrate spawners .
