Type : Blue spotted cichlid
Scientific name
Andinoacara pulcher
( Gill , 1858)

The blue spotted cichlid ( Andinoacara pulcher , Latin pulcher "beautiful") is a species of cichlid from Trinidad and the opposite parts of Venezuela . It was first introduced to Germany as an aquarium fish in 1906. It was previously the leading species of the so-called "Aequidens" pulcher group, a group of species that differ from other members of the genus Aequidens through differences in color, bone structure and scaling, and from which one suspects a closer relationship with the genus Bujurquina would have.

Male blue spotted cichlids can reach a total length of 16 centimeters, the females stay a little smaller. The laterally compressed body shows an olive green basic color and has eight dark horizontal stripes. A number of bright, blue-green lines run down the cheeks. The males are generally more colorful than their female counterparts and take on a blue color during the reproductive period. They also have longer fins and the elongated rays of the dorsal and anal fin often extend around the caudal fin .

Standing, murky waters are inhabited by the blue spotted cichlid as well as clear flowing waters. It feeds on aquatic invertebrates and insects. The clutch, which is usually attached to fallen leaves or a similar mobile substrate, is tended by the female, while the male defends the breeding ground. During this phase, the otherwise peaceful animals can become very aggressive. Depending on the temperature, the larvae hatch after two to four days and are then reburied several times by their parents in previously dug hollows. The larvae swim free three to four days after hatching.

Systematics

After extensive genetic studies of seven cichlasomatine cichlid species previously assigned to the collective genus Aequidens , Musilová, Řícan and Novák founded the new genus Andinoacara in 2009 . The blue spotted cichlid, which is now correctly referred to as the Andinoacara pulcher , was also placed in this new genus .
