Pakeezah ( Hindi : पाक़ीज़ा, Urdu : پاکیزہ ،, translated: The Pure ) is an Indian feature film by Kamal Amrohi from 1972. It is one of the classics among Bollywood films with Arabic and Persian influences.

action

The film takes place at the turn of the century in the Muslim town of Lucknow . Shahabuddin comes from a respected family and still fetches the courtesan Nargis from the brothel to take her as his wife. His father throws her out of the house so as not to let her, as a prostitute, tarnish his status. Therefore Nargis flees to the cemetery, where she lives for a while and gives birth to a child. Eventually she dies and her sister takes the baby.

17 years later, Nargis' daughter Sahibjaan is also a prostitute and the attraction of the whole city. Once, while sleeping on a train, the traveler Salim Ahmed Khan notices her. He leaves her a loving note that Sahibjaan keeps and now dreams of the mysterious man every day.

In fact, she meets him after a boating accident. They both fall in love, but it soon turns out that Salim is her father's nephew. For Salim's father, a marriage is out of the question and forbids the bond.

Sahibjaan dances at Salim's arranged wedding, where her father Shahabuddin tracks down her identity and wins her back as his daughter.

In the end, all her wishes come true and Sahibjaan marries Salim, leaving her past behind.

background

Pakeezah was planned by Kamal Amrohi and his then wife Meena Kumari since 1958 . Originally, Amrohi wanted to take on the male lead himself. Production began in 1964, but after Amrohi and Kumari split up, the project was postponed indefinitely. Kumari, who was already alcoholic at the time, agreed to have the film completed a few years later. Due to her poor health, Kumari had to be partially replaced by Padma Khanna in the dance scenes .

During the film work, the composer Ghulam Mohammed died , whose works were completed by Naushad (background music). The cameraman Josef Wirsching also died during the shooting; RD Mathur took over his part .

Shortly after Pakeezah was released in February 1972, Meena Kumari died of cirrhosis of the liver . After her death, the film, initially received cautiously by the audience, became a classic.
