Lata Mangeshkar (other first names: Hema Latika; Marathi : लता मंगेशकर ; born September 28, 1929 in Indore , Madhya Pradesh ; † February 6, 2022 in Mumbai ) was an Indian singer. She sang the songs in playback for more than 1,000 films, for which she is also called the nightingale of India , and is one of the best known and most respected Indian artists. Alongside classical singer MS Subbulakshmi , she is the only singer associated with the Bharat Ratna, the highest Indian order.

Kata Mangeshkar was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for "Most song recordings in the world". The claim was that between 1948 and 1974 she sang around 25,000 solo, duet and backing choir recordings in 20 Indian languages. Concerns have been raised over the years as to the veracity of this claim, and it has been claimed that this figure is grossly exaggerated, being "only" around 10,000 recordings. She was still active as a singer in the 2000s. Lata Mangeshkar's younger sister, Asha Bhosle , has recorded more songs and has been officially listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in this category since 2011.

Life

Mangeshkar was born in 1929 as the first of five siblings and grew up in Maharashtra . Her father gave her singing lessons. Four of her siblings have also pursued musical careers; most famous of them is her sister Asha Bhosle .

Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first film song in 1942 for the film Kiti Hasaal ; however, following the intervention of her father, who died that same year, the song was removed from the film. After her father's death, she appeared in small roles in Marathi and Hindi films. From 1947 she established herself as a playback singer for Bollywood films , that is, her songs were played as playback for the actors, but also played on the radio ( All India Radio ) across India. She had her big break in 1949 with the song Aayega Aanewaala by Khemchand Prakash from the film Mahal for the actress Madhubala . In the 1950s she became the favorite singer of composers Shankar-Jaikishan , Sachin Dev Burman , C. Ramchandra , Madan Mohan , Hemant Kumar and Salil Choudhury . She recorded romantic duets with singer Manna Dey for Raj Kapoor films and sang for director Bimal Roy ( Madhumati , 1958).

Mangeshkar had major hits with the naushad compositions Mohe panghat and Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya from the film Mughal-e-Azam (1960), portrayed by Madhubala. In the 1960s she worked more closely with SD Burman and recorded numerous duets with her colleagues Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar . The highest-grossing films of this period include Guide (1965) and Jewel Thief (1967), starring Dev Anand . In the late 1960s, SD Burman's son, Rahul Dev Burman , also began composing and collaborating with Lata Mangeshkar.

She sang for Meena Kumari in her last film, the Bollywood classic Pakeezah (1971), and in Hrishikesh Mukherjee 's Abhimaan (1973) , Jaya Bachchan mimed to Mangeshkar's voice. The leading Indian film composers of the 70's were Laxmikant-Pyarelal , Mohammed Zahur Khayyam and RD Burman, who liked Lata's singing and often had her sing along with Kishore Kumar. Many of the song lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi , Gulzar or Majrooh Sultanpuri .

In the 1980s, Lata Mangeshkar scaled back her work on film to make room for younger talent. She was now working with the children of composers who had taken up their fathers' profession; alongside Sachin and Rahul Dev Burman also Chitragupta and his sons Anand-Milind , Roshan (grandfather of actor Hrithik Roshan ) and his son Rajesh Roshan , and Sardar Malik and his son Anu Malik .

The song Yaara seeli seeli from the film Lekin... (1990), which she produced and for which the director Gulzar wrote the lyrics and her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar composed the music, is considered one of the best she has ever sung. She also recorded many non-film songs during the 1990s, including Ghazala with Jagjit Singh . She began working with AR Rahman and had vocal contributions in the films Dil Se , Page 3 , Bewafaa , Lucky: No Time for Love , Veer-Zaara , and Rang De Basanti , among others .

On January 11, 2022, she was admitted to an intensive care unit in Mumbai with COVID-19 symptoms, where she died on February 6, 2022 at the age of 92. Indian authorities announced a state funeral and two days of national mourning.
