Madhubala ( Hindi , मधुबाला, Madhubālā, born February 14, 1933 in Delhi , † February 23, 1969 in Mumbai ; real name: Mumtaz Jehan Begum ) was an Indian film actress .

She was born the fifth of eleven children to a poor family. As a child star, she started working for Bombay Talkies in 1942 . She got the name Madhubala from Devika Rani . She became a movie star with Mahal (1949) alongside Ashok Kumar . In Mehboob Khan's Amar (1954) she appeared with Dilip Kumar . In Bollywood 1950s she played together with Guru Dutt ( Mr. & Mrs. '55 ), Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor . Her most significant roles include the courtesan Anarkali in Mughal-e-Azam (1960) with Prithviraj Kapoor , Dilip Kumar and Durga Khote .

Madhubala had been married to Kishore Kumar since 1961 . She died of chronic heart disease.
