Dilip Kumar ( Hindi दिलीप कुमार Dilīp Kumār ; born December 11, 1922 in Peschawar , † July 7, 2021 in Mumbai , real name: Yusuf Khan ) was an Indian film actor . Between 1944 and 1998 he played in a total of around 65 films; he was considered one of the great film legends of his country.

life and work

Kumar grew up with his eleven siblings in Maharashtra . In 1944 he was working as a waiter in Pune and as a fruit dealer in Mumbai when he was discovered by Devika Rani . He made his film debut in Amiya Chakravarty's Jwar Bhata that same year . Dilip Kumar played an unfortunate lover, a role he played over and over again because of his convincing play. In 1949, Kumar celebrated his first major success in this role in Mehboob Khan's film Andaz (together with Nargis and Raj Kapoor ) and in 1955 in Devdas by Bimal Roy .

Dilip Kumar, along with his colleagues Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, was one of the most important stars of Hindi-Urdu films of the 1950s and 1960s. With the film Mughal-e-Azam (1960), in which he played Jahangir - Akbar's son (played by Prithviraj Kapoor ) - he had another huge success and was at the height of his career. His next blockbuster, Ganga Jamuna , followed closely afterwards in 1961 . Kumar was known as one of the first Indian method actors, especially for his tragic and dramatic roles, which is why he was nicknamed "The Tragedy King".

From the 1970s until his last film in 1998, he appeared in front of the camera less often. In 1982 he starred in the film Shakti by Ramesh Sippy with the new star Amitabh Bachchan , who plays his son. Kumar won a Filmfare Award for his role .

From 2000, Kumar was a member of the House of Lords in the Indian Parliament . He was married to the actress Saira Banu (* 1944) from 1966 until his death . Dilip Kumar died in July 2021 at the age of 98 after a lengthy illness.

Awards

In 1995 Dilip Kumar received the highest Indian award for filmmakers, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award . He is known as the “King of Tragedy” in Indian film and has been awarded the eight-time Filmfare Award for Best Actor as well as the Filmfare Award for Lifetime Achievement . In 1998 he was only the second Indian to be awarded the highest civil order in Pakistan , the Nishan-e-Imtiaz . In 2015 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan .
