Devdas ( Hindi : देवदास , Devadās ) is a 1955 Hindi film directed by Bimal Roy .

action

Devdas and Parvati have been good friends since childhood and have always had a lively relationship, even if they were both quite selfish. Since Devdas was a little good-for-nothing even as a child, his father sent him to Calcutta . After Devdas grows up, he returns. He has now become an educated man who is now planning to marry Paro, but his father thwarts his plans, and for one reason only: Paro comes from a less well-off family.

One day Paro pays Devdas a secret visit in the middle of the night. She suggests running away from home with Devdas. Devdas, who cannot agree on this, tries to dissuade her from this proposal. The resentful Parvati rejects his advances, with Devdas angrily striking her with a stick. But Devdas immediately rips a piece of cloth from his clothes to treat Paro. And Paro realizes that Devdas is her problem on the one hand, but is also her medicine at the same time. The resulting scar remains the only tangible sign of their love.

Paro is married to a widower and Devdas flees to Calcutta. His friend Chunni Babu takes him to a brothel, where Devdas meets Chandramukhi. Chandramukhi is very touched when Devdas gives her money without asking for anything in return. She falls in love with him. However, Devdas, who inadvertently uses her as an emotional prop and is already addicted to alcohol, repulses her every time.

His hopeless passion for Paro only makes Devdas sink deeper. Chandramukhi is different, who leaves her past behind to change her life. Devdas has no will to change anything. Although he now recognizes Chandramukhi, he can no longer offer her anything. He goes on a train journey across India. Desperate, he flees from himself. He dies without ever having seen Paro again.
