Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay (also Chatterjee for short ; Bengali : শরত্চন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় , Śaratcandra Caṭṭopādhyāẏ ; born September 15, 1876 in Debanandapur ; † January 16, 1938 in Kolkata ) was a Bengali author of the early 20th century. His works show the society of rural Bengal . Among other things, he addressed social oppression and superstition.

Life

Sharat Chandra grew up in poverty in the Hugli district . He began to write around 1900 and in 1903 received a minor civil service with the Burma Railway Company in Rangoon . Although he had already written numerous stories, he did not become a well-known and popular author until after 1913. His novels depict the life of impoverished Bengali petty bourgeoisie, trapped in their own prejudices, living a life of social hardship and national oppression. Often women are the focus of his stories. The best known are Baradidi (1913), Charitrahin (1917), Shrikanta (4 volumes, 1917, 1918, 1927, 1933), Grihadaha (1919) and Pather Dabi (1926).

His works have seen numerous film adaptations, in particular Debdas (1917) and Parinita (1914).
