Suchitra Sen began working in 1952 and had her first appearance with Uttam Kumar in Sharey Chuattar the following year . For more than 20 years both were considered the dream couple of the Bengali cinema for romantic melodramas such as Sagarika (1956) and Saptapadi (1961).

One of her most notable films is Asit Sen's Deep Jweley Jai (1959) . Sen plays the nurse Radha in a psychiatric hospital. Your superior psychiatrist argues that it would be helpful for the patients if the staff developed a personal relationship with them. Against her will, Radha gets involved and, after her patient seems cured, suffers a nervous breakdown himself. A Hindi remake of this film was shot in 1969 under the name Khamoshi , in which the role of Radha was taken over by Waheeda Rehman . Suchitra Sen joined in 1963 together with Soumitra Chatterjee in Saat Pake Bandha by Ajoy Kar and won for her portrayal of the award for Best Actress at the International Film Festival in Moscow .

In the Hindi film Sen rarely played. She took her first role in a Bollywood film in Bimal Roys Devdas (1955) at the side of Dilip Kumar . She shot with Hrishikesh Mukherjee , Raj Khosla , Dev Anand and Sanjeev Kumar , but due to minor problems with the foreign language, she never felt at home in Hindi films.

In 1978, Suchitra Sen withdrew completely from the film business and lived isolated from the media. She died on January 17, 2014 in a clinic in Calcutta.
