Hrishikesh Mukherjee

Hrishikesh Mukherjee (actually: Hrishikesh Mukhopadhyay ; Bengali : হৃষিকেশ মুখোপাধ্যায় , Hṛṣikeś Mukhopādhyāẏ ; born September 30, 1922 in Kolkata , West Bengal ; † August 27, 2006 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian film director , film editor , screenwriter and film maker .

Life

He started at the New Theaters in Kolkata and went to Mumbai with Bimal Roy in 1951 and worked with him until he became a director himself. His debut film was Musafir (1957). Commercial success came with the stars Raj Kapoor and Nutan and the film Anari (1959). Anuradha (1960) won him a National Award and Anand (1970) with Rajesh Khanna in the lead role is one of his best works.

In the 1970s, Abhimaan (1973 with Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri ) and Chupke Chupke (1975 with Dharmendra , Sharmila Tagore and the Bachchans) were his most popular films.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 for his contribution to Indian film . In 2001 he received the Padma Vibhushan .
