Nutan ( Hindi , नूतन, Nūtan, born June 4, 1936 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ; † February 21, 1991 ; real name: Nutan Samarth ) was an Indian film actress.

Nutan came into contact with the film in the early 1950s through her mother Shobhana Samarth . After graduating from school in Switzerland and returning to India, she became a star in 1955 with her leading role in Amiya Chakraborty's Seema . Nutan won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for this. Under the director Bimal Roy , she had other great success films with Sujata (1959) and Bandini (1963).

Nutan has starred with most of the male protagonists of her era, from Dev Anand , Raj Kapoor , Balraj Sahni , Sunil Dutt , Ashok Kumar , Dharmendra , Dilip Kumar to Kishore Kumar and Vinod Khanna . It also attracted audiences in the 1970s. In 1978 she played an award-winning role in Raj Khosla's Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki . In the following decade, she often took on mother roles in film.

Nutan was characterized by intense acting, which led Lata Mangeshkar to choose her as the actress who came closest to the expression of her songs. She is a five-time winner of the Filmfare Award / Best Actress . In 1991 Nutan died of cancer.

Her sister Tanuja , and her nieces Kajol (Bollywood legend) and Tanisha are active as Hindi film actresses .
