Bandini ( Hindi : बन्दिनी , bandinī ; Urdu : بندِنی; translated: captured ) is a Hindi film by Bimal Roy from 1963 and is one of the director's best-known works.
action
1934: Kalyani is sent to a women's prison, where she has to serve eight years for murder. She is very popular with the guards. The prison doctor Devendra also immediately notices her, because she is the only volunteer who offers to help a sick inmate as a nurse. Devendra falls in love with her and wants to learn more about her past.
Kalyani is the daughter of a postmaster in Bengal and falls in love with the revolutionary Bikash Ghosh. When her father finally agrees to the marriage, Bikash has to disappear from the village. He promises to come back to Kalyani first, but never returned. Only later does she find out that Bikash has married someone else. The family becomes a mockery of the village, which prompts Kalyani to leave the village to avoid dishonoring her father. Now she works in a hospital, where she takes care of quarrelsome and unpopular women. Her father goes to look for her and unfortunately dies in an accident. On the same day, it turns out that one of her patients is Bikash's wife. Kalyani sees this woman as the cause of all her problems and poisons her.
This story doesn't deter Deven from planning to marry Kalyani. Even his mother accepts them. When she leaves prison, she is expected at Deven's house. But suddenly she meets Bikash, who is sick. In the process, she learns of the circumstances in Bikash's unhappy marriage, which was only the subject of freedom.
Now Kalyani has to decide either Bikash or Devendra. Finally she realizes that she was trapped in her love for Bikash the whole time and that she ultimately chooses love and thus Bikash.
