Shailendra ( Hindi : शैलेन्द्र , Śailendra ; born August 30, 1923 in Rawalpindi , Punjab , † December 14, 1966 in Bombay , Maharashtra ) was an Indian songwriter for Hindi films . He wrote in Hindi and Urdu and is best known for his work in films by actor and director Raj Kapoor .

Life

Shailendra was born as the eldest of four sons under the name Shankardas Kesrilal. He spent his childhood in Mathura . He came to Bombay in 1947 as an employee of Indian Railways . He was active in the local acting group of the Indian People's Theater Association (IPTA), where Raj Kapoor became aware of the poetically gifted young man. Shailendra wrote his first contribution to a film with the lyrics to Barsat Mein Tum Se Mile Hum Sajan ... , the title track from the Raj Kapoor film Barsaat (1949). The success of the film led to a longstanding collaboration with Kapoor and the composer duo Shankar-Jaikishan as well as the songwriter Hasrat Jaipuri .

Shailendra wrote song texts for around 170 films, including compositions by Salil Choudhury and Sachin Dev Burman , some of which were only used posthumously. He was a member of the Progressive Writers' Association . In 1966, shortly before his death, he produced the film Teesri Kasam with Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman in the leading roles.
