action
Belu and her brother Bhola are children who are struggling with their fate: Their father is in prison and their mother is dead. In addition, she forces her angry aunt Kamla to beg on the streets of Bombay . Only their best friend Uncle John, a black marketeer, shows them how to live in dignity in the metropolis ghetto.
Then Bhola comes up with the idea of buying shoe polishing equipment with the money she has begged. After initial difficulties, business is going well, only her aunt is not allowed to notice. When the aunt finds out about it, she throws the children out of the house. Although John gives them shelter, the children are left on their own after his arrest. When the monsoons set in, the shoe shiners are no longer needed and the children threaten to starve to death.
Finally the police come and take them with them. Belu escapes on a train. Belu is taken in by a rich family on the train, but cannot forget her brother.
Now Belu, a rich girl, gives money to the beggars. In the end, she gets back together with her brother, who is then adopted by the rich family. They will then live happier than ever together.
