Raj Kapoor ( Hindi राज कपूर Rāj Kapoor ; born December 14, 1924 in Peschawar , † June 2, 1988 in New Delhi ; real name: Ranbirraj Kapoor ) was an Indian film actor , film director and film producer .

Life

He made his first film appearance as a child in 1935. After further roles in the 1940s, he founded his own production company RK Films in 1948 and produced his first film Aag , in which he also made his debut as a director. Raj Kapoor appeared frequently in comedies. So he had resounding success in Awaara in 1951 , in which he embodied a Chaplinesque "tramp" figure. Raj Kapoor's acting was valued by critics and audiences alike. His films were commercially successful because, like the socially critical film Shree 420 made in 1955 , they were entertaining and close to the people.

Kapoor was also known and loved outside India in the former USSR and the Middle East; in his home country he was one of the most popular stars of Bollywood's Hindi film with Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand . He starred in more than 60 films. Raj Kapoor is a multiple winner of the Filmfare Awards , both for Best Actor and Best Director, for example for Sangam (1964) and Mera Naam Joker (1970). He was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1988 for his many years of work in Indian film .

Raj Kapoor belongs to the Kapoor actor dynasty. His father is the successful stage and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor . His younger brothers Shammi and Shashi Kapoor as well as two of his sons Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor and his grandsons Karisma , Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor are also well-known Indian actors. The third son Rajiv Kapoor , however, could not achieve any further success after his successful debut in the film Ram Teri Ganga Maili produced by his father and withdrew from the film career.
