action
Ram is a law student and dependent on his mother's money. If the money runs short, he pawns his things. One day he saves a little boy by paying the doctor's fees with all the money he had, since the boy's family was even poorer than he was. Ram pays the boy visits and falls in love with his sister, Sohni.
The shrewd Harbanslal provides Sohni's drink-addicted father Gopal with schnapps on credit, in order to be married to his daughter. Now Soni has been promised to Harbanslal, which is why she asks Ram to help her out of this situation. Ram goes to his moneylender to rob the safe, but everything goes wrong and Ram accidentally kills him. Gopal dies from drinking alcohol, while Rams college friend Rehman tries not to let the wedding take place. Ram is followed by a police officer who thinks he is guilty. Finally, another man is about to atone for the accidental murder when Ram feels guilty and confesses to the crime. His sentence is 3 years in prison and Sohni promises to wait for him.

The best-known pieces are Woh subah kabhi to aayegi , Aasman pa hai khuda aur zameen pe hum and China-o-Arab hamara , whose text is Ludhianvi 's criticism of Nehru's directionless liberalism and refers to the contemporary politics of Zhou Enlai and Nasser .
background
The rough framework of the plot is based on Dostoyevsky's novel Guilt and Atonement , but the film is otherwise an emotional plea for social justice in India of the Nehru era. Director Ramesh Saigal had already made a name for himself in this genre with Railway Platform (1955) .
