Prithviraj Kapoor ( Hindi पृथ्वीराज कपूर , Pṛthvīrāj Kapūr , born November 3, 1906 in Samundri , † May 29, 1972 in Bombay ) was an Indian film and theater actor.

Life

He started in amateur theaters in Lyallpur and Peshawar. After dropping out of law school, he starred in adventure and romance films from 1929. In 1931 he appeared in Alam Ara , India's first sound film. In 1933 he joined the New Theaters in Kolkata and starred in some of their best films in the 1930s. His most important roles were great kings, Alexander the Great in Sikandar (1941, directed by Sohrab Modi ) and Akbar I in Mughal-e-Azam (1960, directed by K.Asif ). He played in Awaara in 1951, directed by his son Raj Kapoor . His only directorial work is the film Paisa (1957). During the filming of this, Prithviraj Kapoor lost his voice, which he never fully regained. From the 1960s onwards, Kapoor starred in various films with mythological themes.

In addition to film, Prithviraj Kapoor also worked for the theater. He played Shakespeare plays in English for the Grant Anderson Theater Company. In 1944 he founded his own theater company Prithvi Theater , which existed for 16 years.

He is the founder of Bollywood's Kapoor actor dynasty. His sons Raj, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor and his grandsons Rishi Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor (sons of Raj Kapoor) and his great-grandchildren Karisma and Kareena Kapoor (daughters of Randhir Kapoor) and Ranbir Kapoor (son of Rishi Kapoor) are also well-known Bollywood actors.

Prithviraj Kapoor was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ratna in 1954 , in 1969 he received the Padma Bhushan , in 1972 he was posthumously awarded the highest Indian film prize, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award .
