The Stüdlhütte is a hut of the Oberland section of the German Alpine Club in the Glockner Group at an altitude of 2801  m above sea level. A. It is located in the Fanatscharte at the foot of the Stüdlgrat, which is a demanding ascent to the Großglockner . The first hut was built in 1868, from 1993 to 1996 the modern new building was built.

The Stüdlhütte belongs to the Oberland ( Munich ) section of the DAV. Mountaineers who want to spend the night in the hut can find space in two beds, 106 camps and 23 camps in the winter room , which, unlike the main building, is open all year round. In the summer season, the hut is open from mid-June to the end of September.

Naming

The hut is named after the Prague merchant Johann Stüdl , who u. a. founded the Kals mountain guide association and was therefore decisive for the alpine development of the Glockner region. Stüdl was a prominent member of the Prague section of the DuOeAV and, in addition to the Stüdlhütte, also supported the construction of the New Prager Hütte in the Großvenediger area .

Building history

Johann Stüdl, who came to Kals for the first time in 1867, initiated and financed the first hut on the Fanatscharte. The hut was opened in 1868, measured seven and a half by four and a half meters and offered space for twelve people. It formed an important base on the Neuer Kalser Weg to the Großglockner, which represented an equivalent alternative to the ascent from Heiligenblut . The Stüdlhütte was thus also the first hut of the German Alpine Club, founded in 1869, and was expanded for the first time in 1872. Further modifications and extensions followed.

The necessary new construction of the hut from 1993 to 1996 is the work of the architect Albin Glaser , and addresses the exposed location with wind speeds over 200 km / h as well as energy-efficient construction in the alpine area and the protected area of the Hohe Tauern National Park . It represents an elongated, barrel-shaped building with the cross-section of a trimmed ellipse, the aluminum-covered roof of which is pulled down to the windward side, while the three remaining wall surfaces of the building are covered with wood shingle . With solar thermal and photovoltaic solar energy use, the building is largely energy self-sufficient; bottlenecks can be dealt with by a vegetable oil-powered combined heat and power unit. The building physics was designed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems .

Approaches

The most common approach starts at the Lucknerhaus ( 1918  m ), which can be reached from Kals am Großglockner via a toll road, and leads through the Ködnitztal via the Lucknerhütte to the Stüdlhütte. The walking time is approx. 2 to 2.5 hours over good paths .

An alternative approach is through the Teischnitz Valley , the beginning of which can also be reached by car from Kals. The ascent is much more arduous than the path through the Ködnitztal, but to compensate for it, it is very scenic. In early and late summer, snow fields make the climb here significantly more difficult. 4 hours of walking must be allowed for for this route.

Tour possibilities

Most of the mountaineers who choose the Stüdlhütte as a base have set their sights on the Großglockner as the destination of their multi-day tour. There are several variants available, of which the Stüdlgrat and the normal route via the Adlersruhe are the most common:

  • The ascent over the Stüdlgrat is a demanding ascent with difficulties of up to III + to be overcome. The walking and climbing time is 5 hours to the summit of the Großglockner.
  • The normal route leads from the hut over the Ködnitzkees (the glaciers are called Kees in Austria) to the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte ( 3454  m ) on the rocks of the Adlersruhe. From there the summit is reached via the Kleinglockner and the exposed Glocknerscharte. Time required from Stüdlhütte: 5 hours.

In addition to the tours on the Großglockner, the Fanatkogel ( 2905  m ), which towers directly above the hut and thus represents the Hüttenberg , and the Schere ( 3031  m ), from where an imposing view of the Großglockner, Stüdlgrat, Ködnitzkees and Adlersruhe offers, as attractive destinations. Both peaks can be easily reached from the hut for sure-footed hikers: The Fanatkogel in 15 minutes via the marked path that starts right at the hut terrace; the scissors over the steep slope rising to the north on the marked path in around 30 minutes.
