history

The center of Großdorf

The origins of the settlement name of Großdorf come from the Romance language . The farm name Figer , documented as Zefig as early as 1307 , comes from the Romanesque sub vico ("under the village") and indicates that Großdorf was originally called Fig (Romanesque vicus , "village"). The name Großdorf, however, is relatively young. Originally, Großdorf was probably simply called a village, since the former municipal property of Kals-Großdorf is known as Dorfer Alm (officially Dorfer Tal ).

Großdorf was already the most populous village in the Middle Ages and had the most important agricultural areas in the municipality. Even today four preserved stock mills testify to the importance of grain cultivation. Furthermore, the village consisted of four of the nine ranks of the community. These were the Bergerrotte with the Petronilla chapel, the Gollerrotte, the Taurerrotte and the Praderrotte. In 1754 the Bergerrotte consisted of 16 houses (164 people), the Gollerrotte of 15 houses (132 people), the Taurerrotte of 15 houses (153 people) and the Pacherrotte of 16 houses (137 people).

Großdorf is now the starting point for ski tourism in the community. The first lift was built as early as 1963, and further expansion took place in 1996/97. The building activity triggered by tourism changed the appearance of the town permanently. Nevertheless, the historical building fabric still predominates in the village.

The chapel has a three-bay nave with a stitch cap vault and statues of Saints Joseph , Andrew and James, which were created by locals around the turn of the century.
