The Kalser Straße (L 26) is a 13.75 kilometer long state road in Tyrol , Lienz district . It connects the Kalser Tal to the Felbertauern Straße (B 108) in the Iseltal and runs from the Huben district of the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol northeast to the village of Großdorf . With the exception of the junction in Huben, the road runs entirely within the municipality of Kals am Großglockner and is looked after by the Matrei road maintenance department in East Tyrol.

history

The Kalser Valley was originally only accessible via a steep cart path. From 1910 the Austrian Ministry of Public Works granted an annual grant of 30,000 crowns for the construction of a road. Construction of the road did not begin until 1912, with the outbreak of World War I causing the work to be interrupted. The construction of the road could not be completed until 1927.

course

The Kalser Straße branches off in Huben at the Felbertauern Straße and leads first over the Isel and then steeply uphill to the village of Oberpeischlach . As a result, the road runs on the right bank of the Kalserbach through the hamlets Staniska and Bichl, before briefly changing to the left bank. After crossing the Kalserbach again, the Kalser Straße reaches the “Schleierwasserfall” of the Staniskabach, whereby a parking lot has been set up here. The course of the road then follows the right bank of the Kalserbach, passes below the village of Arnig and after the hamlet of Ellenparte crosses the Kalserbach again at the button bridge. The road then runs west of the village of Lesach and shortly afterwards crosses the associated hamlet of Pradell, before the road crosses the Ködnitzbach and reaches Ködnitz , the main town of the municipality. After crossing the village, the road ends shortly afterwards in the neighboring village of Großdorf.
