The Iseltal is one of the main valleys in East Tyrol . It is traversed by the Isel and bordered in the west by the Defereggen Mountains and in the east by the Schobergruppe .
The Iseltal begins at Matrei in East Tyrol , where the Virgental and the Tauerntal meet. From there the valley first runs in a southerly direction to Huben (municipality of Matrei), where the Defereggental and the Kalser Tal branch off, then further in a south-easterly direction, where the Isel flows through the municipalities of St. Johann im Walde , Schlaiten , Ainet and Oberlienz . At Lienz the Iseltal flows into the Lienz Basin .
history
In the years 1065-1077 the Iseltal is mentioned for the first time in the tradition book of the Brixen monastery as "in regione Isala" .
