The Villgratental is located in East Tyrol in the Hohe Tauern , is a northern side valley of the Hochpustertal and is traversed by the Villgratenbach .

geography

The Villgratental begins at the confluence of the Villgratenbach in the Drau near Heinfels . The valley then runs north and at times along the border between the communities of Heinfels and Sillian . Then the valley reaches the municipal area of Ausservillgraten , where the Aue and Unterwalden fractions are located. The main town of the municipality is located about five kilometers after the confluence with the Drava. There, at the confluence of the Winkeltalbach , which branches off to the north, into the Villgratenbach, the Villgratental turns west-northwest. After the Unterfelden fraction, it reaches the municipality of Innervillgraten , where the Kesseberg and Ahornberg fractions are located in front of the main town. The Hochberg and Lahnberg fractions follow after the main town. Here the Villgratental ends at the confluence of the Stallerbach and Kalksteiner Bach rivers, and the Staller Tal branches off to the north and the Kalksteiner Tal to the southwest.

Culture

In 2010 the carol singing in Villgratental was included in the list of Austria (national cultural property) as an intangible world heritage , as declared by UNESCO . The valley is considered to be particularly wild and remote. The conflict over the poacher Pius Walder became well- known and relevant to tourism . In addition, the Villgratental has been part of the Bergsteigerdörfer -Initiative of the PES since 2008 .
