As a result, population growth began, which was strongest in the 1950s. After the population had risen only slowly from 1961, the municipality recorded even stronger growth in the 1990s, with a peak at the beginning of 2005 with 502 inhabitants. Since then, the population has fallen again by around 10%. Schlaiten has been suffering from a strongly negative migration balance for decades , but this population decline between 1971 and 2001 was more than offset by the strongly positive birth balance. While the migration balance remained negative since the turn of the millennium, the birth surplus fell sharply. In some years the community even recorded a negative birth rate.

economy

Workplaces and employees

Schlaiten hardly houses any companies and in 2001 did not have any workplaces with more than ten employees. In terms of local businesses, there is only an inn, a guesthouse and a few small businesses that are one-man businesses. Most businesses are family businesses with a maximum of one employee. The cultivated areas of the community have medium, steep to very steep slopes, whereby the partially acidic soils are not very suitable for arable farming. Arable farming therefore fell from 66 hectares to 4 hectares between 1951 and the turn of the millennium. The focus of agriculture is on livestock and dairy farming. Most of the farms, which are run as pair farms, are now mostly run by the farmers as a sideline, with cattle farming predominating. The cattle herds have hardly changed since the end of the Second World War. Sheep farming is just as important, although it has been declining again after a high in the 1980s. Pig farming has been greatly reduced since the end of the Second World War, horse and goat farming plays and didn't matter. The Umball-Alpe in the municipality of Prägraten am Großvenediger, which was acquired by the municipality of Schlaiten in the 19th century and covers an area of around 1,000 hectares, is now owned by an agricultural community of Schlaiten farmers. The statistics showed 39 agricultural and forestry holdings for the municipality of Schlaiten in 2010. These included 12 full-time businesses, 23 part-time businesses and four businesses owned by legal entities. In 2010 these farms worked a total of 3,757 hectares, with 12 percent of the area being farmed by full-time farmers, 8 percent by part-time farmers and 80 percent by businesses with legal entities. Between 1999 and 2010, the number of full-time farms fell by three farms, while the number of part-time farms remained the same.

The forest area of Schlaiten extends on the shady slope of the Defreggengebirge over an altitude of 720 to 2100 m. Of the total area of the municipality, 38% or 1383 hectares are forest, with 600 hectares (44%) being farmed forest, 281 hectares (20%) being cropped protective forest and 502 ha (36%) being non-profitable protective forest. The forest areas are owned by 48 private forest owners, two agricultural communities and the municipality of Schlaiten, whereby 647 hectares are privately owned, 386 hectares are owned by agricultural communities and 350 hectares are owned by local authorities. The predominant tree species is the spruce with 69% share, followed by the larch with 28% and the fir with 1%. Other hardwoods account for a total of 2%. There is a 70 km long network of paths for cultivating the forest areas.

Transport and infrastructure

Schlaiten is accessed through the Schlaitener Straße (L 289), which leads from the neighboring municipality of Ainet via the districts of Plone, Mesnerdorf, Bacherdorf to the Gantschach district. At Ainet, the Schlaitener Straße has a connection to the Felbertauernstraße and thus a connection to the national transport network. Ainet is connected to the public transport network by buses operated by ÖBB-Postbus GmbH . Line 4418 connects the community of Schlaiten via the towns of Oberdrum , Oberlienz and Ainet to the district capital, Lienz, with a journey time of almost half an hour and only one stop in the community in the Mesnerdorf district. The closest train station for the Pustertalbahn is also in Lienz .

With the neighboring municipalities of the Lienz basin, Schlaiten has merged to form the "Lienzer Talboden waste water association", with Schlaiten only joining the waste water association in 1999. The municipal wastewater is treated in the Dölsach sewage treatment plant , with the Drau serving as a receiving water . Due to the late joining of a wastewater association, at the end of 2002 only 37% of the 134 objects producing wastewater at that time were connected to the sewage system or the sewage treatment plant. The aim of the first construction phase was to connect the buildings in Schlaiten-Dorf and was already in operation in 2002. In 2012, the third and final construction phase of the local sewer system began to connect the Gantschach district to the sewer network.

education

Schools have been in operation in the community of Schlaiten since the end of the 18th century. This was set up in Widum as a result of the Theresian reforms in 1785. The pastor Protasius Zaschkoviz provided the school service. In 1806, the first official school was founded in Schlaiten under the patronage of the sovereign, and a school house of its own was built in 1880. This schoolhouse was in operation until 1953, before the new schoolhouse with 2 classes was opened in autumn 1953. Between 2002 and 2003 the community had the school house completely renovated. In addition to the elementary school in Schlaiten, there was also an elementary school in the Göriach fraction between 1930 and 1939. The elementary school in Schlaiten underwent a general renovation between 2002 and 2003. In 1990, the community in Schlaiten also founded a kindergarten, the establishment of which cost 2.4 million schillings. The opening took place on February 11, 1991 with 10 children, with a high of 21 enrollments in 2000/2001. The kindergarten is open on weekday mornings.

Security and Healthcare

With regard to health care, Schlaiten is organized together with the communities of Amlach , Leisach , Tristach , Oberlienz , Gaimberg , Ainet and St. Johann im Walde in the social district of Lienz Land. In the health district, for example, health services such as elderly and care assistance, home and household help and meals on wheels are organized. However, due to its small size, the community does not have a community doctor. Rather, you have to avoid visiting the doctor or visiting a hospital in the district capital Lienz. The nearest police station is also in Lienz. The Schlaiten volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1899 and received a new fire station in the year it was founded , which was replaced by a new fire station in 1928. After the purchase of an "Opel Blitz" in 1969, a new fire station was inaugurated that same year, following the purchase of a fire engine in 1995 and the purchase of a used fire truck in 1998 for the 100th anniversary of the Schlaiten volunteer fire brigade around a vehicle hall was expanded.
