Population development

The population of St. Johann im Walde developed much more slowly than the population growth of Tyrol or the Lienz district, especially in the second half of the 20th century. From 1869 the number of inhabitants of St. Johann hardly changed at first, only between 1910 and 1923 did the population increase significantly. However, no trend could develop from this, which is why the population rose and fell several times between 1910 and 1951. Only after 1951 did long-term growth set in, during which the population rose by around 25% by 1971 to the previous high of 356 inhabitants. Since 1971, however, the number of inhabitants of St. Johann has continued to decline, so that the number of inhabitants in 2018 is below the value of 1951. While the birth balance was still positive between 1991 and 2001 (+19), St. Johann lost inhabitants from 2001 to 2011 due to a slightly negative birth balance and a slightly negative migration balance .
