The Sportunion Österreich is one of the three umbrella sport associations in Austria .

history

The sports union was founded in 1889 under the name Christian German Gymnastics Association as a spin-off from the Austrian Gymnastics Federation and re-established under the name Gymnastics and Sports Union on May 2, 1945 by former members of the Christian-German Gymnastics Association and the Reichsbundessport of Catholic youth.
It currently looks after (as of 2019) over 921,000 members in around 4,370 clubs. The headquarters of the General Secretariat is in Vienna . Like the ASVÖ , the Sportunion is independent of parties according to its statutes . However, numerous top officials are closely associated with the ÖVP . It belongs to the Fédération Internationale Catholique d'Education Physique et Sportive (FICEP) and the Fédération Internationale Sportive de l'Enseignement Catholique (FISEC).

The Sport Union promotes the performance as well as the width and health sports and is also active in such sectors as individual health and wellness . It is geographically divided into the nine federal states. Each federal state has its own competencies and many degrees of freedom.

As the only sports umbrella organization in Austria, the Sportunion has received the ISO 9001 certification for quality management and the Austria quality mark .

In May 2019, the "Trend Sports Festival" was launched in cooperation with Uniqa Insurance Group .
