Peter McDonald (born August 4, 1973 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and was general secretary of his party from 2015 to 2016. He ran for the National Council election in Austria 2013 on the federal list of the ÖVP.

education

The Upper Austrian with Irish roots attended the Hörsching elementary school and then the Traun Commercial Academy . After graduating from high school and doing military service, he began studying economics (business administration) at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz in 1994 . His focus was on strategic management , marketing and organization. During his studies he spent a year at the University of Wales . In 2002 he successfully completed his studies. The title of his thesis was: “ Corporate culture as a competitive advantage of a higher order”.

Even during his studies, McDonald was involved as chairman of the student body at the University of Linz. At the same time he was a member of the university senate and the university management, as well as part of the steering committee of the university's strategy development project.

In 2003 he founded the "Initiative Group Upper Austria". As part of the project, sponsors made scholarship programs possible for Upper Austrians in order to be able to participate in the European Forum Alpbach . McDonald is a regular speaker at the Alpbach Health Forum .

Professional background

From 2003 to 2008 Peter McDonald was a consultant for the Austrian Economic Association. His responsibilities included health, social, educational, employment policy and the compatibility of work and family.

Director of the Austrian Economic Association since 2009

As director of the Wirtschaftsbund, McDonald acts as a political and strategic advisor to the president. He is a member of the Presidium of the Austrian Economic Association.

Managing chairman of the SVA - social insurance for the commercial economy 2011 to 2014

McDonald was responsible for the company's success as the managing chairman of the second largest social insurance company in Austria.

In 2012, all SVA insured persons were asked about their concerns in the first initial survey conducted by the social insurance system and important findings were obtained from almost 120,000 questionnaires submitted: 58% of the insured would like a bonus for a health-conscious lifestyle. The SVA has implemented this concern with the prevention program “Independently Healthy”. The compatibility of family and self-employment as well as social security for entrepreneurs are important to the insured. Therefore z. B. doubled maternity allowance and introduced non-contributory sick pay for long illnesses.

Together with Hans Jörg Schelling , Peter McDonald led the ÖVP social security group. He was a member of the target control commission for health reform, member of the federal health commission and co-negotiator for health reform. This was decided in the form of the 15a agreement between the federal government and the states. He was also involved in the development of the health master plan for the Austrian social insurance system.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Main Association of Austrian Social Insurance Institutions 2014/15

On October 21, 2014, McDonald was unanimously elected the 13th chairman of the board of the main association of Austrian social insurance institutions . He held this position until October 15, 2015. As Chairman of the Board of Management, he had overall responsibility for the € 58 billion budget.

The “TEWEB” project, an independent telemedical advice service in the sense of an Austria-wide, free “health hotline”, was implemented under McDonald’s. The pilot phase starts in 2016 in Vorarlberg, Lower Austria and Vienna. The Austria-wide rollout is planned for 2019.

In recognition of his social security activities, he was awarded the Social Security Ring of Honor on October 4, 2016.

General Secretary of the ÖVP 2015/2016

On October 15, 2015, McDonald was appointed general secretary and spokesman for media policy of the ÖVP federal party after his predecessor Gernot Blümel was designated as the regional party leader of the ÖVP Vienna. He stated that the goal of his work was to sharpen the “ÖVP brand” and to promote reforms in Austria. As a member of the federal party executive committee, he was entrusted with the reorganization of the strategy development, communication and realignment of the brand core of the ÖVP. On September 4, 2016, McDonald presented the completed core brand process to the party executive committee and adopted it. At this point in time, McDonald left the company at its own request in order to “reorient” itself. Werner Amon became his successor.

Member of the Johnson & Johnson Medical board member since 2017

Since February 1, 2017, Peter McDonald has been a member of the Johnson & Johnson Austria Board of Directors as Life Science Innovation Manager ( Chief Strategy Officer). He pursues the goal of further developing business models at European level and of becoming a partner for hospitals in Austria from a medical device developer to solutions beyond products.

President of the Sportunion Wien 2017 to 2018

At the extraordinary state parliament of the Sportunion Wien on May 11, 2017, Peter McDonald was elected as the new President of the Vienna Regional Association. The Sportunion Wien is one of the three sports umbrella organizations in Vienna with over 70,000 members in around 225 clubs (as of September 1, 2017) and a member of the Sportunion Österreich . He succeeded Mag. Werner Suppan in this function . Peter McDonald has been a member of the Sports Union for many years and was active as a (competitive) athlete and functionary in several sports clubs.

President of the Sports Union Austria since 2018

At the 24th Bundestag of the Sports Union Austria on June 30, 2018, McDonald was elected President of the Sports Union Austria for the next 4 years with 100% approval of the 150 delegates. He succeeded Michaela Steinacker , who had taken over this role from Hartwig Löger on an interim basis in February 2018 . Together with his team, consisting of the Vice-Presidents Michaela Huber, Karoline Edtstadler and Yvonne Schuring , the financial advisor Wilfried Drexler and the board members Pamela Forster and Urs Tanner, McDonald emphasized in his inaugural address that sport must again take on a higher priority in politics and society and called for the tax deductibility of club membership fees and the mandatory opening of school sports facilities for sports clubs under the slogan: "Sports facilities save hospital beds". In 2018 he was elected President of the Sports Union Austria for four years.
