The 1991 Asian Basketball Championship (officially: FIBA Asia Championship 1991 ) was the 17th edition of this tournament and took place from August 22 to September 1, 1991 in Kobe , Japan . It was organized by FIBA Asia , the Asian basketball association. The winner qualified for the 1992 Summer Olympics .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two groups with five teams and two groups with four teams. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. The two best of each group played in groups 1 and 2 for places 1–8. The third and fourth placed played in groups 3 and 4 for places 9-16. The fifth placed in groups A and B played directly for 17th place.
