The 1997 Asian Basketball Championship (officially: FIBA Asia Championship 1997 ) was the 19th edition of this tournament and took place from September 11th to 19th in Riyadh , Saudi Arabia . It was organized by FIBA Asia , the Asian basketball association. The two best teams qualified for the 1998 World Basketball Championship .

According to the rules of FIBA ​​Asia, the five best-placed teams from the 1995 Asian Basketball Championship were allowed to take part in the tournament in addition to the host Saudi Arabia , as well as two other teams from each regional association, with the exception of East Asia, as five participants were already qualified for the tournament. Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in three groups with four teams and one group with three teams. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. The two best of each group played in groups E and F for places 1-8. The third and fourth placed played in groups G and H for places 9-15.
